I hope you realise that I’m sacrificing myself for you. By telling our neighbour to prioritise your food over my comfort.

Gonna need to come up with a name for this (future) puppet soon.

Today I added foam:

gif of a bird head puppet opening its beak. it's made of green foam on a plastic mesh frame.ALT
bird puppet head all wrapped in masking tapeALT

Time to pattern out Gerald’s head fabric. Wish me luck!

Now with skin!

Gerald the terror bird puppet. He now has patchy pink fuzzy fabric for skin, but still no beak or eyes.ALT

Pleased with how his eyes turned out. There are some bubbles in them because I was rushing when casting the resin but other than that, they worked exactly as I’d hoped.

Gerald the bird puppet, with a hand holding a big green resin eye up to his fuzzy pink face.ALT
green resin eyes with wires sticking out the sidesALT
same eyes viewed from the back, on the side they've been paintedALT

The wires will help fasten them to the plastic canvas underneath. Then I’ll be able to sculpt the beak and eyelids around them. The follow-you effect looks great so far.

Gerald Update: mostly just have his beak and face skin left to sculpt/paint, and then his head will be done.

Gerald the terror bird puppet, almost done, facing rightALT
Gerald facing leftALT
facing left and slightly away from you. the pupils look like they are looking back, directly at youALT
Gerald being puppeteered with his mouth openALT

I’m nervous about using the Apoxie Sculpt because once it’s on there’s no going back! Gotta get it right the first time.

Tags from whispering rayn: oh he's beautiful. i wouldn't use apoxie sculpt on the beak. it gets really heavy really fast. and i don't think you're gonna want that on a hand puppet. it makes it harder to control. try a thin craft foam/EVA foam. and definitely look at foam clay. stuff is a life saver i swear.ALT

Yo @whispering-rayn BIG thanks for recommending foam clay. I found some at Michaels and gave it a shot and it’s actually pretty great. I was expecting it to basically be model magic, but the texture is greatly improved. It IS much less durable than I was hoping for, and it doesn’t want to hold fine details, but the tradeoff is that it’s incredibly lightweight.

image

I tried it out last night on the eye skin, and really like the result, so today I decided to continue using it on the upper mandible. I don’t regret using Apoxie Sculpt for the bottom mandible, as I do want that one to be especially durable. But I think it the added weight would have been a strain on my arm if I had used it for the upper. Here’s hoping it accepts paint well!

It is time for Gerald to make his debut tonight on a haunted hike!

Gerald the bird puppet's head. it is pink and fuzzy with grumpy green eyes and a big tan aquiline beak.ALT

He’s very excited!

“it’s weird for queer minors to be friends with queer adults” oh my god. ohhh my god.

intergenerational community support, especially in a community that is split so much age wise as the queer community, is immensely fucking important. get to know older queers and younger queers. this is how communities frazzle out and die to infighting.

the hypothetical queer adult that people are mad over in the post this is refrencing is 35 years old. only 35.

its weird for any minors to be friends with any adults, queer or not. There should be no reason why unrelated adults or minors should be making close relationships in any sense outside of professional ones. I understand wanting education, but they can be taught when they are adults as well.

is this a joke.

image

If you believe there is something inherently wrong with adults being friends with teens, you’ve been brainwashed into believing that every adult sees youth as a form solicitation.

This makes you part of the problem.

They have never seen a medieval dress in their life. Asoiaf universe is very clearly based on the medieval times. I met a person who thought the women in the series would be wearing Victorian style corsets! Literal Victorian corsets in the MIDDLE AGES!!! Like some people need to look at a few old paintings and fashion plates because things like 2013 prom dresses in a historically inspired setting are simply not it. And imagine showing that much leg, your reputation is ruined! 😭

image

first of all love the tags @tell-them-the-north-remembers <3 the general public not having historical fashion knowledge is definitely the biggest flaw i find with all of these kinds of posts, like the fanfic moment of “they would not fucking say that” but in fashion form (it’s kind of the same with the modern y2k aesthetic’s dissonance in relation to what y2k style and makeup actually looked like, lol)

also i am so glad the victorian corsets and undergarments for the medieval period thing really annoys someone else too, because it just feels so wrong! do they have no mind for how it affects the shape, structure and overall style? and while not everyone cares about or has a passion for historical fashion, and i can excuse a few, but there are so many of these “what i would wear as…” that are genuinely revealing and believing any floor length dress can function in a period or period inspired setting is so frustrating. especially when technology and media have assisted in making sure fashion history related resources are available and readily accessible in easy to understand language, as well as recreations and literally thousands of accurate, gorgeous costumes from pop culture to choose from instead of modern prom dresses

Yes, yes yes! The most important part of differentiating between historical eras of fashion is by the silhouette of the clothing worn, achieved by the undergarments of the time (with A LOT of padding)!

I do completely get that not everyone is as obsessed with historical accuracy when it comes to fashion as I am but simply pretending that people meant to be from centuries ago would be wearing modern halloween costumes or simply modern floor length dresses is frustrating and quite frankly ignorant of the way clothing throughout human history has told a story.

And the thing especially with the asoiaf series is that it takes place in a medieval-inspired setting and though we do not have an overabundance of surviving portraiture showing off garments in entirety we still do have a share bit of them. And they are great! Much greater and more authentic than whatever the hell they are putting in those “what i would wear” videos!

image

Like just look at all the patterns and nuances of the silhouette of the gown (and the headdress! Why do they always ditch the headdresses???) on the woman in this painting from 1450 by Petrus Christus!

image

And who can forget the Arnolfini Portrait?

image
image
image

Just look at all the jewelry, designs and headdresses worn by Catherine of France, Isabella of Portugal and Magdalena of Valois!

Medieval fashion was fun, it breaks my heart to see it get overlooked in favor of shit like the ones in your original post.

I think the headdresses get ignored because they’d cover up the hair and in films and tv shows, they want to show off the actress’ hair or wig or whatnot. Clarice Orsini in Medici is an example of this.

image
image

Sidenote: That wig Synnove wore is stunning. Who are the hair stylists and why aren’t they working for HOTD?

When you are doing a show about an event in history tho, the hair should be accurate. If you want to do something that shows off your actresses’ hair, then do a fantasy show or historical fiction with fictional characters.

When you have a fantasy show like HOTD/GOT or LOTR, then you definitely have a lot more wiggle room with the costumes and headdresses. Which should mean that the designers go all out, but with what we got on HOTD and ROP, there seems to have been very little effort?

image
image
image

One thing I have to give shows like the Tudors and the White Princess is that, despite being historically inaccurate with the costumes, they were still gorgeous costumes. And Wolf Hall stayed as close as they could to historically accurate and they still served.

Also, this video here is done by a costume historian named Bernadette Banner, and she talks about the Tudors’ costumes. Surprisingly, the men’s costumes were much more on the mark.

I absolutely love Bernadette Banners (as well as Karolina Zebrowska and Abby Cox) and I have watched this video more than I can count. (The thumbnail has made me remember just how abhorrent the costuming Little Women (2019) was and I am mentally facepalming again, and the no-chemise on-skin “corset” wearing done by Anne Boleyn, yikes)

And honestly as much as I don’t mind historically inspired shows getting rid of headdresses when it is actual historical shows that do it I get mad because of just how much potential was wasted.

And it is even worse when they don’t give us the headdresses because they want to show us… the actress’ beachwaves???

And the historical hair? Why is it always loose, like if you are a grown woman you are not wearing loose, uncovered hair in public. It is simply inappropriate (for the large majority of history). Not to mention the ofttimes ridiculous curls worn all the way from Baroque era to the mid 19th century are always missing too!

Like I hate Philippa Gregory and all her adaptations with all my heart but as much as the costumes can be inaccurate at least they try. The Tudors costumes are inaccurate, the headdresses are inaccurate too, sometimes ridiculous (French Hoods used as headbands? Whatever it is they make Katherine of Aragon wear in the first season?) but at least they try. And judging by period drama costuming standards costumes in Wolf Hall are actually pretty good!

And most of this inaccuracy in costumes stem from a place of making everything more 1-simplified 2-sexy for the audience. Instead the costuming, hair and makeup being done to show the way people lived in an authentic way, those are instead done to make the actors looks as conventionally attractive to the modern eyes as possible. And simplifying garments to the point they actually look like Halloween costumes is honestly insulting the audience’s intelligence. From gowns worn by working women in small towns being laced in the back when they should be laced in the front to the way dresses are shown as being one single garment instead of different separate layers put together to make a whole outfit.

The shows/movies with my favorite costuming are always ones that go all out in detail, stay still largely historically accurate and even if they are “twisting” something, understand what they are twisting as opposed to the made-up and oversimplified costumes.

One of my all time favourites is Emma. (2020) and it gets the costuming just SO right.

Because I am sorry to the people who like the costuming in P&P (2005) but,

The picture on the left is not what women in the regency era looked like. The picture on the right is. And also just think “Which one of them is more interesting?”

image
image

Oh, and that yellow Emma dress is straight out of an actual regency fashion plate from 1809!

image

And hair? On point. People in the past wore styles we would call ridiculous but they are still a part of fashion history. And quite frankly they are very interesting! Much more interesting than beachwaves.

image
image

And the bonnets! My God, the bonnets!

image
image
image

image

See, period drama producers! You can let the designer be historically accurate and still end up getting gorgeous results! Headdresses don’t ruin outfits, they make them!

Not to mention all the dresses that are reconstructions of actual regency era gowns in this film that I can’t put here because Tumblr doesn’t let me post more pictures. As well as how great the men’s costumes in this movie are too!

Historical accuracy can be beautiful, interesting, sometimes ridiculous but still captivating. Unlike the tired-ass copy-paste historically inaccurate costumes that Hollywood has gotten us used to. And audiences can handle historically accurate costuming. If they want racy outfits, modern dialogue and 21st century glam makeup they can just watch modern dramas.

Anyways sorry I got too carried away again but historical fashion is yet another thing I am very passionate about! 💗

The use of white phosphorous in Palestine is so calculated and insidious because not only does it cause horrific, usually fatal burns but its residue in the envionrment can cause illness, birth defects, and cancers for generations afterward. Look at the Twitter account Fallujah Birth Defects (graphic) which documents defects and abnormalities so rare most medical journals don’t have them. White phosphorous was dropped in Fallujah in 2004 and it’s still killing Iraqi babies. What do you think it’s going to do to the survivors of the Palestinian genocide.

And there was no back-and-forth…

Also “from the river to the sea Palestine will be free” actually means “the river and sea will turn red with the blood of Jews” and people STILL think it’s a progressive saying.

Hamas is NOT Palestine. Hamas doesn’t care about Palestine. Hamas wants Jews dead and will kill Palestinians if it means killing more Jews.

Yeah, a lot of people don’t realise that’s a Hamas Line from their genocidal manifesto, some west bank groups have used “from the river to the sea, give us all democracy” which is a call I can get behind, and one which also indicts Hamas for suspending all elections since taking power in gaza.

so when straight people ask me why I say I’m “queer” or “gay” instead of sharing my actual identity as a panromantic demisexual non-binary sapphic queer I just tell them “ok look, when you’re talking to someone who isn’t local and they ask you where you’re from and you either say the name of the largest city nearby or ‘town name, suburb of large nearby city’ so they can get some geographical context of where you’re located right, bc they’re probably not going to know the name of the little town you actually live in.”

but if you’re talking to a local you can say the name of your actual town bc they have a greater chance of knowing where/what that is.

ok well when I’m talking to a straight person I start with queer bc chances are they aren’t as familiar with the context of all the little towns in that big queer city and need gps (gay positioning system) to find me.

if I’m talking to another queer person and I say I live in a suburb of gay city in a town called panromantic on the demisexual side of the tracks which is in the county of queer and I live off the intersection of non-binary and sapphic, they’d probably be able to find me with little to no problems, make sense?
